Tang Soo Do Mi Guk Kwan History
On December 9th, 1995, fifty nine of Grand Master Ferraro’s senior students and studio owners held an
historic meeting where it was decided by unanimous vote to form a new martial arts organization.
At this inaugural meeting, the Tang Soo Do Mi Guk Kwan (Korean: “A brotherhood, school, and place in
America to practice the way of the empty hand defense”) was formed with Grandmaster Ferraro as its
president.
Under the guidance of Grandmaster Ferraro, the Tang Soo Do Mi Guk Kwan was developed into one of
the largest Tang Soo Do organizations in the world, with 30 studio locations within the United States, nine
in South America, ten in Central America and one location in India.
Tang Soo Do Mi Guk Kwan was developed from combining the teachings and techniques of many
traditional martial arts systems. Some of the martial arts that were drawn on for its developement are:
the traditional systems of Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan; Karate-Do; Aikido; Jujitsu; Tai Chi Chuan;
Shaolin Kung Fu; Hai Dong Gumdo (Korean Sword); Philippine Kali.
The basic components that comprise Tang Soo Do Mi Guk Kwan curriculum are: Meditation; stretching
and conditioning; cardiovascular training; basic hand and foot techniques (blocking, kicking and striking);
hyungs (forms, preset pattern of movements that teach students how to make transitions between
offensive and defensive techniques); one step sparring (block and counter techniques); self defense
(grappling and joint locking techniques); weapons training; free sparring techniques.
